Who Is… Becky Sauerbrunn

Often referred to as the unsung hero of the team, Becky Sauerbrunn is the defensive catalyst for the United States. She played every minute at the 2015 Women’s World Cup and is the team's co-captain alongside Carli Lloyd.

Soccer beginnings
Sauerbrunn grew up with two older brothers who toughened her up by using her to test their latest stunts. This toughness showed on the field as she played soccer at the University of Virginia and debuted with the national team in 2008. In her first U.S. appearance, she broke her nose while contesting a ball in the air. She played in the team’s next game.
