WrestleMania Could Be Coming to New 49ers Stadium

Santa Clara stadium vying for WrestleMania.

Do you smell what the new Santa Clara 49ers stadium is cooking?

It could be WWE WrestleMania -- the WWE said so.

The mayor of Santa Clara and top 49ers executives are flying to the World Wrestling Entertainment headquarters in Connecticut to convince the pro wrestling conglomerate to hold its main event in 2015 at the new 49ers' stadium, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

The visit to chairman and former performer Vince McMahon follows a "blitz" of WWE officials in California, where 49ers owner Jed York impressed upon the wrestling officials the size and technology of his team's new home.

Levi's Stadium, still under construction, already scored the Super Bowl in 2016.

Philadelphia and Santa Clara are the two finalists to host WrestleMania, which will announce its host city "early next year," the newspaper reported.

Wrestling is popular in the Bay Area, where the likes of Hulk Hogan took to the ring at the Cow Palace in the 1980s, the newspaper reminded.

It's also big business: up to 75,000 fans could fill the normally-68,500 capacity Levi's Stadium, which means a payday close to the ones seen in South Florida and New Jersey for recent WrestleManias.

There were $12.3 million in ticket sales at the new MetLife Stadium earlier this year, the newspaper reported
