Jaguars Sign Rush Off 49ers Practice Squad

Outside linebacker Marcus Rush, who led the NFL in sacks during the exhibition season, is finally on the 53-man roster of an NFL team.

But he is not getting his chance with the 49ers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday morning announced they signed Rush off the 49ers’ practice squad and onto their 53-man roster.

The Jaguars placed offensive lineman Jeremiah Poutasi on injured reserve with an ankle injury to create the roster spot for Rush.

Rush, who spent his rookie season in 2015 on the 49ers practice squad after signing with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie, was among the 49ers’ final cuts before the start of this season.

In addition to recording six sacks in the exhibition season, he also forced two fumbles and recorded a game-clinching interception on a deflected pass in the 49ers’ exhibition finale against the San Diego Chargers.

“I was surprised that we got him back, to be honest with you,” 49ers defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil said on Sept. 8. “When I found out that he was going to be on the practice squad, I was really excited about it because for the next four weeks we have three outside backers and he’s a guy that if we need to we could easily activate him and bring him aboard.

“He’s a heck of a football player. He’s done a hell of a job throughout the preseason, and he’s a guy that I’ll be shocked if he’s on the practice squad all year.”
