Kaepernick Getting Comfortable: ‘It's Coming More and More'

SANTA CLARA – Quarterback Colin Kaepernick said Tuesday he is feeling more self-assured every week since reclaiming his role as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

“It was something that took a little bit to get into a rhythm, get comfortable with everything that’s happening within the offense, and it’s coming more and more every week,” Kaepernick said. “I’m feeling comfortable with what’s going on, why we’re calling plays, how we’re trying to get things done, and being able to build on those.”

When asked why it’s important to know the intent behind every play that is called, Kaepernick said, “If you do it and don’t know the intention of why you’re doing it, you really don’t have a purpose.”

It might be that a play is being called to set up another play later in the game. Or, perhaps, a play is called to take advantage of a possible flaw that the opposing defense has shown in a certain situation.

“Having that complete understanding of 'We’re calling this play to try to get this done,' is very helpful,” Kaepernick said. “It helps you get through progressions quicker and also helps you play with a clear mind.”

Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said he sees Kaepernick working through his progressions better with every start since taking over for Blaine Gabbert.

“He’s improving with his reads,” Modkins said of Kaepernick. “He’s improving with handling the offense, getting us in and out of plays.”

The 49ers are 0-4 with Kaepernick as the starter. But Kaepernick has produced back-to-back solid games against New Orleans and Arizona in defeat.

He is completing just 53 percent of his pass attempts, Kaepernick has thrown five touchdowns and two interceptions for a passer rating of 82.2. In five starts, Gabbert completed 58 percent of his attempts with five touchdowns and six interceptions and a passer rating of 69.6.
