Kelly: Unfair to Starters to Play Reserves to ‘evaluate'

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers have been out of the playoff picture for a couple months and their 13-game losing streak has been snapped.

But coach Chip Kelly said he has no intention of playing anybody in the season finale Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks who has not earned the playing time. He said player evaluations are conducted every day following practices.

"They have to earn that (playing time)," Kelly said on Wednesday. "This isn't Christmas and you give out gifts. I don't think that's fair to the guys who are here that have worked and done everything you've asked of them.

"You also have to be cognizant of the fact that we watch these guys every day. We make evaluations every day. We see them practice every day. To just say, ‘Hey, I know this kid's been awful in practice, let's just chuck him out onto the field and see what he can do.' It just doesn't work that way."
