Newton Worried About Hits to Head? ‘My Focus Is 49ers Defense'

The NFL on Wednesday fined Broncos defenders Darian Stewart and Brandon Marshall for hits to Cam Newton's head in the 2016 opener.

The reigning MVP was asked about his physical condition leading up to the Week 2 contest against the 49ers.

"We're dwelling on something that I don't want to dwell on," Newton told reporters Wednesday. "My focus is the San Francisco 49ers' defense, the team that shut out the Los Angeles Rams.

"I gain nothing from talking about the past. The NFL is going to do their investigation and I know wholeheartedly that [the Panthers' medical] staff did an exceptional job of protecting me, along with other players. My focus right now is trying to win football games."

When pressed on the issue, Newton drove his point home.

"I worry about winning. That's it. Winning. Winning football games," the quarterback said. "That's why I'm here. I'm not here to worry about retirement plans. I'm not here to worry about pensions. I'm not here to worry about worker's comp. I'm here to win football games, simple and plain."

Newton in Week 1 finished 18-of-33 for 194 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked twice for minus-19 yards.

Carolina was handed a 21-20 loss by Denver.

The 49ers (1-0) travel to Carolina to take on Newton and the Panthers (0-1) in Week 2.
