Staley, Smith Not Cleared to Practice With 49ers

Left tackle Joe Staley and wide receiver Torrey Smith were among four 49ers who were not cleared to participate in practice Thursday.

Staley (hamstring), Smith (concussion), center Marcus Martin (ankle) and cornerback Dontae Johnson (groin) were not available to practice and appear unlikely to play Saturday when the 49ers travel to face the Los Angeles Rams.

Staley has missed two games with the hamstring injury. The 49ers this week signed seven-year veteran offensive lineman Andrew Gardner, who started eight games for Chip Kelly's Philadelphia Eagles in 2014.

Smith is likely to miss his second game due to a concussion he sustained two weeks ago against the New York Jets. The 49ers placed Quinton Patton on injured reserve this week. Patton underwent surgery to repair a broken foot. The 49ers activated DeAndre Smelter from the practice squad to fill Patton's roster spot.
