A's Reliever Rodriguez Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery

Oakland A's right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez had successful surgery on his right shoulder Friday at the Gold Coast Surgery Center in Chicago, Ill. The surgery was performed by Dr. Anthony Romero, who repaired a tear in Rodriguez' latissimus dorsi tendon and did a debridement procedure on his teres major tendon.

The latissimus dorsi was completely avulsed and the teres major has good attachment with minimal tearing. Protocol for this surgery would be to begin throwing activity in four months.

Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list July 4 with a strained right shoulder. He was 2-0 with a 4.20 ERA and .210 opponents batting average in 34 relief appearances with Oakland this year and has a 3.74 ERA and .198 opponents batting average in 97 relief appearances in three seasons with the A's.
