Posey on 30th-place Giants: ‘Disappointing Is Probably Not Strong Enough'

DENVER - Are you a glass half-empty person or a glass half-full person? It matters after Tuesday night's game.

The 9-6 loss to the Rockies was No. 87 of this horrible season, and it came with some big-picture significance. The Giants (54-87) passed the Phillies (53-85) and officially took over the worst record in the major leagues. They are two games ahead of (or behind) the White Sox (54-83), the team they visit this weekend.

If the season ended today, the Giants would have the No. 1 pick in the draft. That gives you the ability to add a superstar and also gives you a larger pool of money to spend on all your draftees. Of course, none of the current Giants care about that one bit. Most of them will be long gone by the time the prospect arrives, if he ever does. For now, they're stuck with the half-empty reality that this season only gets worse day by day.

The 87th loss came with plenty of the trademarks of these Giants. It also ended with Pablo Sandoval flying out to tie Johnnie LeMaster's SF Giants record for most hitless at-bats (37). In the eighth, Buster Posey took a foul tip off the hand and immediately departed. Posey's X-rays came back negative, which is good news. That's rare in this season. Asked about being the worst team in the majors, Posey paused.

"I don't really have words for it," he said. "‘Disappointing' is probably not strong enough."

Bruce Bochy said he was surprised the Giants have gone back in the tank like this after they seemed to be turning it around a bit in August. They have lost 10 of 12, bringing an ugly mark back into play. The Giants will have to go 9-12 down the stretch to avoid becoming a $200 million team that lost 100 games.
