Wrong Side of History: Sandoval Sets San Francisco-era Hitless Streak

DENVER -- Bruce Bochy had Pablo Sandoval out of the starting lineup Wednesday because he wanted to give him a game off, plus Thursday's off day, to clear his head and work on his swing. The plan was to get Sandoval back at third base on Friday in Chicago.

That changed when Bochy needed a pinch-hitter in the sixth, and that meant Sandoval's rough series at Coors Field ended with him setting a franchise record you don't want. Sandoval struck out looking to lead off the inning, extending his hitless streak to 38 at-bats. That broke Johnnie LeMaster's San Francisco-era franchise record, set in 1984.

Sandoval does not have a hit since a single in the fifth inning on August 25. In addition to breaking LeMaster's mark, he has the longest hitless streak of any active big leaguer. Sandoval passed David Price, who has 37 hitless at-bats as an American League pitcher.

Overall, Sandoval has 19 hits in 102 at-bats since being called up on August 5.
