SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants on Monday put the finishing touches on a staff shakeup, naming Phil Nevin the new third base coach and Jose Alguacil the first base coach.
Nevin came from the Diamondbacks organization, while Alguacil had been the manager for Triple-A Sacramento. Nevin and Alguacil will replace Roberto Kelly and Bill Hayes, respectively.
Nevin, 45, spent seven seasons playing for Bruce Bochy in San Diego and the two have long lived in the same neighborhood. He was an All-Star in 2001 and a .270 hitter in 12 big league seasons, with 208 homers and 209 doubles. Nevin was the first overall pick in the 1992 draft.
Nevin spent the past three seasons as a Triple-A manager for the Diamondbacks. He recently interviewed for their big league job that eventually went to Torey Lovullo, and he also reportedly interviewed to be the Astros' manager a couple of years ago.
The 44-year-old Alguacil has been a rising star in the organization for several years. He is a regular in big league camp during spring training, working with infielders, and he was called up to the MLB staff this September to continue working with some of his Triple-A players. Alguacil managed in Sacramento this season after a year with Double-A Richmond.
The Flying Squirrels had a 15-game losing streak early last season but Alguacil earned praise for keeping the clubhouse headed in the right direction, and the team ended up with a winning record, missing a postseason spot by one game.

--- The Giants put right-hander Ian Gardeck back on the 40-man roster. The hard-throwing reliever is recovering from Tommy John surgery. He was designated for assignment after undergoing the procedure.
