Giants Honor Jose Fernandez, Hang Jersey in Dugout

The Giants played their first home game Tuesday night since the tragic passing of Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez, who died Sunday morning in a boating accident. To honor his legacy, the team hung a custom Giants No. 16 jersey with his last name across the back.

San Francisco also had a moment of silence before taking on the Rockies at AT&T Park.

Giants center fielder Denard Span posted on Instagram a picture of his hat with "JF16" written above his bill in remembrance of Fernandez just hours before first pitch. Span also changed his Instagram profile avatar to a picture of Fernandez in his orange Marlins jersey.

"It just breaks my heart what's happened here. This kid was really a special pitcher and as far as I know, just a really great guy that did a lot in his community," Bruce Bochy said Sunday morning on the death of Fernandez. "For this to happen, it's a blow to baseball. It's a real tragedy.

"I spent a little time with him and you just loved the way he played the game from the other side, his enthusiasm and passion and the way he competed on the mound. But not just on the mound - at the plate, you could see how much fun he was having playing the game of baseball."

In three appearances against the Giants, the 24-year-old Fernandez went 1-1 and also hit a home run off of Matt Cain.

I gotta pay my respects to the homie! #RIP to the young legend.
