How Should Giants Lefties Approach Cubs' Lester? Will Clark Offers Advice

Programming note: October Quest starts tonight at 5pm on CSN Bay Area, and immediately after the final out of Game 1.

After the 2014 season, Jon Lester chose the Cubs over the Giants in free agency.

On Friday night, the Orange and Black will face the lefty in Game 1 of the NLDS at Wrigley Field.

"If you boil down how he throws and what he throws, he loves his cutter," former Giants first baseman Will Clark said on KNBR 1050 on Friday morning. "And he loves his cutter to right-handers, and he loves his cutter to left-handers ... I'd walk up to home plate, I'd be looking for a cutter, I'd move up on the plate and I'd look for the ball away from me."

Lester went 19-5 with a 2.44 ERA in 32 starts this season.

Over five appearances in the 2013 playoffs, Lester went 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA.

But over his last three playoff outings -- the 2014 AL Wild Card Game, Game 1 of the 2015 NLDS and Game 1 of the 2015 NLCS -- Lester is 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA.

It's unclear how many lefties will be in the Giants' lineup to face Lester and his cutters.

"I can promise you Brandon Belt is gonna see a bunch of 'em," Clark added. "If (Denard) Span's in there he's gonna see a bunch of 'em, (Joe) Panik is gonna see a bunch of 'em. So, you take the odds in your favor.

"If you're expecting to see five pitches every at-bat, at least three of them are gonna be cutters, so you'll get some pitches to hit."
