Matt Duffy's turbulent season appears to be over.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, lingering soreness in Duffy's left Achilles will force the Rays to shut him down with season-ending surgery as the next step of action.
Following an August 1 trade from the Giants to Tampa Bay, Duffy appeared in 20 games, hitting .284 with three doubles, one home run and seven RBI. When he joined the Rays, he converted to shortstop.
"We want to be 100 percent sure that we're ready to go by next season. I guess that's one of the concerns," Duffy told the Tampa Bay Times.
Moving from the natural grass to the artificial turf of Tropicana Field could be playing a part in Duffy's soreness.

"The soreness seems to come on a little quicker when we're at home," Duffy said.
Duffy originally strained his left Achilles in mid-June and was placed on the disabled list by the Giants on June 20. By the time he came off the DL, he was no longer a member of the Giants, dealt to Tampa for Matt Moore.
After being activated from the DL on August 12 by the Rays, Duffy experienced "mild soreness" in his Achilles just four days later.
In 90 games between the Giants and Rays this season, Duffy hit .260/.312/.360 with 14 doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI.
