Carr, Manziel Talk Recently, ‘anything I Can Do to Help Him'

ALAMEDA – Elite members of the 2014 quarterback draft class grew close before the NFL’s annual amateur selection. Derek Carr, Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel were together quite a bit during that process, and became friends of various degrees.

Bortles and Carr are tight. Bridgewater got along with everyone as well. Manziel was also in that group, though he has fallen on hard times.

He was released by Cleveland in March after several run-ins with law and issues with substance abuse. He’s out of the league now, with possible suspensions upcoming should Manziel get signed by an NFL team.

Carr’s career has heading in the opposite direction, and is a n MVP candidate in just his third professional season.

Manziel came up in an interview between Carr and NBC correspondent Peter King aired before a “Thursday Night Football” game between the Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. Carr said that he would help Manziel if he could, and Manziel tweeted that he would take Carr up on his offer.

Sure enough, he did.

Carr said Manziel reached out to re-establish a connection, and that the two had a conversation recently.

“He reached out, and I reached back out to him,” Carr said before Wednesday’s practice. “Anything I can do to help him. I think he’s extremely talented. People get drafted in the first round for a reason. He can run, throw. He’s very a creative, dynamic player.

“Obviously, he just got in a little trouble and we’ll see. I don’t know where it’s going to go. There’s no plan or anything like that. That’s just me being me. I’m just trying to help a friend out, to be honest.”

Manziel is reportedly taking classes at Texas A&M, where he starred as a college football player.
