Nieto Nets Two, OT Goal in Sharks' Exhibition Win Over Canucks

BOX SCORE

The Sharks on Sunday picked up a 3-2 preseason win against the Canucks at Rogers Arena courtesy of an overtime goal from Matt Nieto.

Nieto, the speedy San Jose forward, scored 4:20 into the overtime period, with assists coming from Nikolay Goldobin and Brenden Dillon.

The Canucks were first on the board, with Tuomo Ruutu scoring a short-handed goal early in the first period.

Nieto, who scored the game-winner, also scored the first goal for the Sharks in the first period to tie it at 1-all.

Anton Rodin of Vancouver scored toward the end of the first, giving the Canucks a 2-1 lead heading into the middle frame.

Kevin Labanc's power play goal for the Sharks tied it at 2-2 in the second period. Chris Tierney and new addition David Schlemko were in on the action.

San Jose starting goalie Martin Jones stopped 26 of 28 shots faced.

It was an impressive performance for Nieto, who looks to be on the bubble in a competitive Sharks training camp.

"I think he looks good. He looks like he packed on some muscle. He's a little heavier," coach Peter DeBoer said earlier in the week.

"He's always had back-you-off type speed. That's something we're obviously looking for. A lot like some other guys here, he brings some things to the table that we could really use."
