Steph Curry Will Stand for Anthem, Wants to Talk to Kaepernick

OAKLAND – Stephen Curry announced Monday that he won't be joining the protest movement initiated by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The back-to-back MVP added that he respects Kaepernick's decision to peacefully protest during the playing of the national anthem – and will find different ways to express his social concerns.

"I plan on standing," Curry said during Media Day on Monday.

"But like I've said, there are ways that everybody can affect the mindset of people around them and the awareness of what's going on without, in that moment, with the national anthem playing, kneeling. I've always said I respect Colin because he took a bold step, in that regard, to continue the conversation and make it more pointed. But I do plan on standing."

Curry said he has met Kaepernick once before and would like to have a conversation in which they could discuss the issues.

"I respect everybody's voice, everybody's platform and their opportunity and right to protest what they feel in their heart is something they what to change," Curry said. "I've said that plenty of times about Colin. I respect what he's doing.

"I respect the message that he's fighting for and I hope the spotlight is on that particular message and the things we can do to make changes that are blatantly obvious we need to change.

"I hope, going forward, it's not about who's raising their fists or who's kneeling and who's standing . . . it's about what Colin and other guys' message is and what we don't want to stand for any more."
