EA Thinks Nintendo Is Preparing a Wii 2

The Wii is showing its age. Now that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have their own respective motion controls, along with their high definition visuals and robust online gaming networks, the Wii isn't so special anymore. It's really time for a Wii 2 says EA Games.

In an interview with Industry Gamers, EA Games honcho Frank Gibeau let it slip that Nintendo is "coming back with a second act" and then proclaimed that the Wii is now a "legacy console," in the same boat as the PlayStation 2. What could he possibly mean by that? Everyone thinks it's the Wii 2.

Concerning a Wii 2, Gibeau believes it needs to happen — this year. He stressed that developers are trending towards HD consoles and leaving underpowered consoles like the Wii and PS2 behind.

At GDC 2011, Nintendo showed off how it had experimented with a glasses-free 3D Wii at one point before shifting the idea over to the 3DS. With so much talk about the the need for HD in the Wii, it's possible that Nintendo might be preparing to wow gamers with a new home console at this year's E3 gaming expo in June.

Things we'd like to see in the Wii 2 aside from HD graphics is an even more accurate 1:1 Wii Remote Plus, an online gaming service that matches or exceeds Xbox Live and PlayStation Network and hardcore third-party games like BioShock and Bulletstorm.

The Wii is almost five-years old, but it's already huffing and puffing to keep up. With the 360 and PS3 gunning for a 10-year life cycle, the Wii's outdated hardware won't be able to make it another year. Gibeau is right — the Wii 2 needs to happen and it needs to happen soon.
