Now You Can Watch TiVo Recordings Anywhere in Your House

Never mind that TiVo is struggling, losing $10.2 million in the last quarter — the company is still chugging ahead into its future with its two upcoming TiVo Premiere models, and today it announces slick compatibility with HP MediaSmart Servers.

If you're lucky enough to have the latest MediaSmart Server EX490/EX495 or the DataVault X510, HP MediaSmart Expander for TiVo lets you transfer shows over from a TiVo DVR onto your server and watch them from any PC, Mac, Xbox, or PS3 on your network. Or you can move your TiVo recordings from the server back onto the TiVo. This new trick also lets you manage your recordings from the MediaSmart server.

The MediaSmart server is our favorite way to watch video and listen to music files all over the house, with everything stored in one convenient space that automatically backs up all our PCs and Macs at the same time. However, we're disappointed in this rollout, because it's not compatible with older models of the MediaSmart server. The good news is, EX47x/EX48x models are easily upgraded to the new 3.0 software, and then they'll play nice with TiVo, too.

Our upgrade disk is on the way (for $30 and no way to download it — damn you, HP!), so we'll test this new TiVo back-and-forth routine as soon as we get it. But c'mon, HP. Backward compatibility — heard of it?
