Tesla Takes a Step Toward Self-Driving Cars with Imminent Software Upgrade

If you’re getting impatient for a fully automated car, Tesla has something to tide you over.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Monday morning that – come Thursday - the Palo Alto-based electric carmaker will send a software update to Model S owners, which will make their cars partly automated.

The $2500 upgrade, which Tesla says is made possible by cameras and sensors already built into the car, will let your Model S — and, eventually, the Model X — change lanes autonomously and park by itself.

We’ve seen self-parking technology in other cars, but Tesla is the first to send it to all who are willing to pay.

But while Tesla owners may be excited, Wall Street is not.

Investors, wanting to see more Model X cars on the road, sent Tesla's stock price down about 2 percent Monday.
