UC Santa Cruz Offering $80,000 to Winners of Hackathon

Everything is bigger about this next UC Santa Cruz Hackathon.

The field of entrants, the interested judges, and the prize pool.

A total of $80,000 is up for grabs, a bounty sought after by 200 entrants so far, according to reports. That's up from $10,000 last year.

The contest runs from Jan. 9-11, and is open to teams of UCSC students who fancy themselves app-smart.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that there's bigger interest from locals in business, with berry giants Driscoll's offering up $5,000, and other prizes offered to makers of apps to help nonprofits as well as local agricultural providers and marine life researchers.

Entry costs $25 per student.
