Yahoo Cleaning Its App Closet

New CEO took only a couple of weeks to make some changes.

That didn't take long. New Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson has clipped the wings on 10 mobile apps, according to an official blog post.

Thompson, no doubt tasked with answering "Just what is it that Yahoo does?", has officially put Yahoo on a "mobile first" strategy. So he's started to clear the shelves, freeing more bandwidth for other, more core applications.

Our plan is to keep moving, to keep innovating, and to continuously measure and scrutinize what's working and what isn't . ... In that spirit, today we're decommissioning several of our current mobile apps.

The apps that got iced:

  • Yahoo! Meme (iPad and iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Mim (iPad)
  • Yahoo! Answers (Android)
  • Yahoo! AppSpot (Android and iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Deals (iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Finance (BlackBerry)
  • Yahoo! Movies (Android)
  • Yahoo! News (Android)
  • Yahoo! Shopping (iPhone)
  • Yahoo! Sketch-a-Search (iPad and iPhone)

There are some copycats on that list that just didn't see much user adoption -- given that other, best-of-breed services were already thriving in their respective spaces (think: Twitter).

One app that survived the cut is Livestand -- a Flipboard-esque for aggregating content on the go. PaidContent.org touched on this, too, with a thought that Livestand may not be long for this world if it doesn't catch on.

So what about getting the word out on Livestand? Marketing and awareness behind Yahoo products -- save for its news and finance mini-portals -- seems to lag behind others.

That said, Google never really pushes its myriad apps and functionalities, and it does just fine.
