Big Rig Overturns, Dumping Millions of Bees Onto Interstate 35 in Oklahoma

A semi-truck hauling honey bees overturned Tuesday afternoon in Oklahoma.

The truck's trailer broke open in the crash, dumping millions of bees and their bee hive boxes onto Interstate 35 in Pauls Valley, about 70 miles north of the Red River.

A sheriff's deputy who was called to the crash was unable to get out of his vehicle because a massive swarm of bees covered part of his patrol car.

Drivers said they were running into bees about a half mile away from the incident.

Beekeepers cleaned the area for hours, salvaging as many bee hives as they could.

Officials said highway crews will burn what's left of the mangled bee hive boxes Tuesday night and use the smoke to drive the remaining bees away.
