If you're looking for the best moustache in the country, look no further than Concord resident Larry McClure -- he has the trophy to prove it.

McClure won the Best Moustache division of the first-ever National Beard and Moustache Championships held in Bend, Ore. earlier this month.

"I've always had a moustache or a beard, but I cut the beard off and just let my moustache grow," McClure said about his white handlebar-style 'stache.

McClure said he found out about the the June 5 event from Phil Olsen, a lawyer from Lake Tahoe who is the self-appointed captain of Beard Team USA, which helped to organize the event.

"And lo and behold, I won the son of a gun," he said. "The weather wasn't the best, but heck, it was fun."

It was the first national competition of its kind, Renee Davidson, a promoter for the event, said.

"There's been world competitions, and regional or citywide events, but this was first national one," Davidson said.

Nearly 200 people competed in a variety of categories, from best moustache, best partial beard, best full beard, as well as a freestyle category. The winners were chosen by an eight-member jury that included the "Miss Oregon" 2009 contest winner, CC Barber, and Sirwan Singh, who has the  world's longest beard, according to Guinness World Records.

McClure said he was "dumbfounded" when his name was announced as the  winner for best moustache.  McClure said he thought the loud applause he received during the  competition probably persuaded the judges.

"My wife said there was an uproar," he said. "It was deafening."

Along with the trophy, McClure and the winners in the other categories also won $1,000. He said that if he can get a sponsor, he would consider competing in the next world championships, tentatively scheduled to take place sometime in 2011 in Denmark.

If he does compete in any future contests, McClure doesn't plan to  switch up his style: a long moustache curled up at the tips.
