Dog Shoots Master During Hunting Trip

An outdoor adventure nearly turned tragic for a California man out with his best friend over the weekend.

A 53-year-old Los Banos man set out with a hunting partner and his dog, a Labrador retriever, on Saturday to shoot some ducks near Highway 152.

After a day of hunting, he set down his shotgun to pick up some decoy ducks about 15 feet away, the Merced County Sheriff's Department said. That's when the female black Lab stepped on the gun and fired a shot right into her owner's back.

The safety was on, authorities said, but the Lab's paw somehow disengaged it and fired the round.

The hunter was treated at a hospital and sent home the same day.
