Two British teens have sparked outrage after they dressed up for a Halloween contest as the twin towers during the 9/11 terrorist attack -- and won.

The costumes, labeled “South Tower” and “North Tower,” featured explosions, flames and people jumping from windows, The Sun newspaper reported. The 19-year-old students also wore hats with Americans flags planted in wreckage for the contest at Rosies nightclub in Chester, England.

According to the paper, Amber Langford, a biology student whose father is reportedly a retired pilot, and criminology student Annie Collinge received £150 ($240) after being crowned "best dressed."

"The insensitivity level for this act of ignorance is topped by none. As for the nightclub who allowed it, sponsored it and endorsed it, shame on you,” John Feal, president of New York-based 9/11 victims’ organization The FealGood Foundation, told The Sun.

The teens apologized, telling The Sun in a statement that, "The idea was to depict a serious, modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke."

A spokeswoman for the Stonegate Pub Company, which runs Rosies nightclub, said, it was "extremely concerned" the pair had won the contest.

The Sept. 11 attacks killed nearly 3,000 people.
