Papergirl Project to Fling Art From Bicycles

Physical newspapers may be going the way of Vaudeville and the telegraph, but don't mothball your paper route just yet.
"Papergirl" is a bike-art project that seeks to deliver rolled-up works of art to random passers-by around the City. In a recent call for submissions, Papergirl's organizers ask artists to mail their work to a PO Box. The only requirement is that the art must be flexible enough to roll up.
The endeavor is a collaboration with Mission Bicycle Company and PUBLIC Bikes. Both companies have a sterling reputation among bike aficionados for their attention to aesthetics.
The deadline for submissions is Sept. 18, to be followed by an exhibition before the art is distributed. And then sometime after that, presumably, San Franciscans will want to keep their eyes out for hipsters bearing gifts.
San Francisco isn't the only city getting the Papergirl treatment. The project began in Berlin, where graffiti laws discourage postering. And across the North Sea, a Papergirl project in Manchester is currently soliciting submissions. Submissions to Papergirl Brooklyn are due next week, and last year's Papergirl Portland distributed over 200 pieces of art.
San Francisco's experiencing a boom in public art lately. A giant rocketship was just erected on the Embarcadero, and a giant Buddha has appeared in front of City Hall, the work of Zhang Huan.
