A Sacramento store owner threw a box of rice into the face of an armed robber to successfully foil a holdup on Thursday night, police said.

The owner of A and M Food and Liquor at 1838 Auburn Blvd. then hopped into his van to chase the fleeing robber and accomplice. Both robbers eventually got away, a police report said.

At about 8 p.m., two people entered to store to carry out a robbery, the report said.

One of the robbers pointed a gun at the owner and demanded cash, police added.

The owner threw the rice, which startled the robber.

The robbers both left and the store owner followed them in his van.

The robbers made their way on foot to a nearby AM/PM store on Marconi Avenue, where they got into an 80s-model Toyota and drove away, the report added.
