Woman's BMW Mysteriously Explodes in West Park Driveway

Charred plastic and metal are what's left of a woman's luxury car. It wasn't set on fire, but actually exploded while she was sleeping inside her South Florida home.

"I never expected this to happen. I'm still in shock to be honest," Beverly Fisher said.

Fisher's dream car, a 2009 BMW 5 Series, is now a chunk of melted metal. She parked it in her driveway in West Park Wednesday night, and it was her son who woke her up at 3 a.m. Thursday.

"I look out and all I see is the hood, just blew up in flames," Fisher said.

Fire investigators said it sparked somewhere in the left engine compartment of the car.

Fisher and her son tried to extinguish the fire with a hose, but their biggest concern was the flames hitting the house and whether the car was going to blow up.

As of right now, fire officials said there are no signs of foul play, but they're still investigating.

Fisher said there were no warning lights in her car, and it underwent regular scheduled maintenance.

"I hope BMW looks into how they design their engine and make sure this doesn't happen because this could've been worse," she said.

We only found one recall for her car, for a faulty tail light. NBC 6 spoke to BMW officials on the phone and they said what happened is very rare, but they're now looking into it.

"They have not sent someone out yet, I'm waiting," Fisher said.

But she's not waiting anymore. After our phone calls, the company called to say they're now paying to have it towed, to get her a rental car and to personally investigate the vehicle.

Fisher bought the car used from a dealership, and they're now looking into what happened along the way.
