San Francisco is taking the first step toward raising cab fares.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency released its proposal for fare changes Tuesday. Under the plan, fares would increase 50 cents per mile, 10 cents per minute spent in traffic. The starting rate for cabs would go up 40 cents, to $3.50.
The change would make cab rides in San Francisco some of the most expensive in the country. According to the SFMTA, only Boston and San Diego would have higher meter mileage rates. San Jose is the only other city in the country with a $3.50 starting rate.
The changes would mean a 20% hike over current rates.
The SFMTA cannot approve the new rates until its June 21st meeting. All five board members say they will vote yes on the proposal.
The fare increases will likely go into effect Aug. 1.
Cab fares in San Francisco have not gone up since 2003.
