May 3 Election Results

Unofficial results are in for the May 3 special election.

The results are in after an important election day for a number of Bay Area schools. Most of them got the parcel tax increases they were counting on to help balance their budgets.

ALAMEDA COUNTY

In Alameda County, Measure B and Measure E both failed by slim margins.

Measure B was a parcel tax for the New Haven Unified School District. It needed a 2/3 majority to pass, but was a fraction of a percent off that mark. 65.71% voted yes.

Measure E was a parcel tax for the Pleasanton Unified School District. It also needed a 2/3 majority to pass. 65.16% voted yes.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

Contra Costa County voters were asked to decide on Measure A and Measure B.

Measure A was a parcel tax for the John Swett Unified School District. It needed a 2/3 majority to pass, but missed the mark. 59.25% voted yes.

Measure B passed. It will guarantee the preservation for the Lafayette Unified School District's math, science and technology programs as well as fund art and music. Property owners will pay about $15/month more because of Measure B. This tax will be in place for four years.

SAN MATEO COUNTY

San Mateo County voters did not just decide on parcel taxes, but the District 1 Supervisor seat.

David Pine appears to be the county's new District 1 Supervisor, with 27.2% of the vote. Richard Holober was close behind with 26%.

Measure A, a parcel tax for the San Carlos School District passed. The measure is expected to provide about $1 million/year to the district over the next eight years. It is an extension of a previous tax passed in 2003.

Property owners will pay about $111 extra per year as a result of the parcel tax, though because it is an extension there will be no real change in their bills.

Measure B, a parcel tax for the Ravenswood City School District, also passed. It will help the district maintain its core programs and preserve after-school programs.

The measure ads a $98 per year to property owners' bills.

Measure C, a proposed parcel tax for the Jefferson Union High School District failed. It needed a 2/3 majority, but only received 59.5% of the vote.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY

All four measures on the Santa Clara County ballot passed.

Measure A impacts the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District. It will increase the tax for property owners $49 per year over six years.

Measure B will bring more money into the Sunnyvale School District. Property owners will pay $59 more per year over seven years. The tax starts on July 1, 2011.

Measure C means more money for the Cupertino Unified School District. Property owners will pay $125 more per year over a six year period. It is expected to generate $4.4 million per year for the school district.

Measure D impacts the Los Altos School District. Property owners will pay $196 more per year.

In most instances, senior citizens can apply for an exemption to the increase.
