Women and The Wage Gap

Equal Pay for Equal Work

And now, an NBC Bay Area Editorial

Last week, we passed a milestone called "Equal Pay Day" marking how far into "this" year women have to work to match what men earned last year for the same work ...110 extra days!

I'm Suzanne Shaw, NBC Bay Area Editorial Director

Women average just 77 cents for every dollar paid to men doing essentially the same jobs. It's worse for minorities and as women get older, the wage gap widens. We know gender discrimination is wrong, saying jobs dominated by women are less valuable, wrong again. It has to stop!

Two bills in Congress, the "Fair Pay Act" and the "Paycheck Fairness Act" toughen the laws against discrimination, and require employers to divulge their pay scales.

We urge you to tell you senators and representatives to support these bills and end the wage gap.
