Cinequest Maverick Awards

Cinequest Film Festival 2014 starts tonight! They plan to wow crowds with not only an impressive lineup of films, but also a list a deserving Maverick Award recipients. The award gives honors to key leaders from the worlds of entertainment and technology. Tonight's opening celebration will honor the "father of the cell phone," Martin "Marty" Cooper. Inspired by Captain Kirk's Communicator on Star Trek, Cooper conceived and led the team at Motorola to develop the first handheld mobile phone in the 1970s. Cooper was the first person in history to make a handheld cellular phone call. Others being honored are famed author, Neil Gaiman (Stardust, Coraline), recognizing the unique and powerful cinematic creations, and multiple Golden Globe and Emmy-nominee, Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises, Jobs ).

NBC's Law and Order SVU star, Christopher Meloni will receive the Maverick Spirit Award at Cinequest's Closing Night, March 16, with the World Premiere of Small Time, the directorial debut of Joel Surnow (head writer of Miami Vice, co-creator and executive producer of 24 and writer/producer of The Kennedys). Both Surnow and Meloni will appear with Small Time on Closing Night, when Cinequest proudly presents Christopher Meloni with his Maverick Spirit Award.
