Hatchet-Yielding Suspect Arrested After Allegedly Attacking San Francisco Parkgoer

An assailant attacked a parkgoer with a hatchet on Monday until he was tackled by a group of Good Samaritans, police said.

The suspect struck the victim near Turk and Gough streets in the Fillmore District around 4 p.m., according to police.

The 39-year-old man was sitting in Jefferson Square Park when the suspect approached him and hit him with the hatchet’s handle. The victim tried to run away, but the 23-year-old suspect followed him and continued to beat him, according to police.

When the parkgoer fell on the ground, the suspect raised the hatchet’s blade above him, but was stopped by Good Samaritans, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries to his back, knees and hands, police said.

The suspect has been arrested, but no details have been provided about a motive or the charges he faces.
