Giving Education a Digital Upgrade

Trading Textbooks for Technology Online

And now, an NBC Bay Area Editorial...

I’m Suzanne Shaw, NBC Bay Area Editorial Director.

California is about to purchase new textbooks and teaching materials for millions of kids in thousands of public schools.

We’re already spending more than $300 million a year on books. But we have a huge opportunity right now to go digital, and the Bay Area can lead the way.

Electronic readers can and must replace most textbooks. Electronic texts can be easily updated, geared to different learning styles, and can help transition non-English speaking students to English instruction.

And we can use the money we save buying printed books year after year to keep more teachers, teaching.

At NBC Bay Area, that’s what we think. What do you think?
