Governor Schwarzenegger and his administration recently decided to keep 100 state parks open that were on the budget chopping block. This momentary stay for state parks may not last. The $14.2 million fix achieved through one time maintenance and equipment cuts will do nothing to solve next year's looming $22 million shortfall, and another $22 million the following year. But this is just a symptom, what about the cause?

In this editorial, we get to the root of why our state parks are in crisis, and why we as a state continue to face a much larger systemic problem.

The governor should be getting accolades for having the fortitude for considering everything that could be cut not just what is popular. The question the editorial should ask is what should be cut instead. If not the parks then should it be more school cuts or more healthcare cuts. The bottom line is there is no new revenue coming and further tax hikes will only force more people to retrench and more companies to leave the golden stats. That leaves budget cuts the only other option.
