Local Schools. Local Solutions

Let's Empower Our Local Communities

As Bay Area schools agonize over what to cut…  decisions must stay local!

I'm Suzanne Shaw, NBC Bay Area Editorial Director...

San Jose Unified gave us a starting point… with 32,000 students, not one teacher is being laid off. They worked locally finding other solutions. They extended the school day, shortened the school year, increased class size and cut administrators; unfortunately tough choices have to be made. But giving local school communities the power to make them is a must.

New state laws shake up the status quo, giving locals and parents more control. We can now more effectively challenge seniority and low scores, to keep, for example, a new science teacher over a senior one.

Using this power, may be the only way we keep the best and the brightest.

That's our take...Tell us what you think.
