The indulgences of Pink Saturday may prove less than perpetual if the SFPD refuses to budge.
Tens of thousands will descend on Castro street for the annual Pink Saturday party, a Pride Week tradition set for June 27th, but if the party doesn't get a permit, will it make a sound?
That's the problem faced by the event's organizers, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The SFPD has continually delayed approval of the decades-old fest, complaining of a lack of funds.
It leaves the Sisters with only a few weeks to finalize plans for 350 volunteers and 250 private security guards.
"Spokesnun" Barbi Mitzvah told the Bay Area Reporter, "We can't wait another two weeks, otherwise we will pull out and SFPD can do what it wants to do."
As Wilson remarked on his blog I'm just sayin', "It is a total community celebration, like Halloween without the costumes, messiness, tourists, straights, gawkers, and trouble."
That could change if the permit isn't approved.
Local merchants have supported the Sisters' plans for beer booths and ID card checks, worrying that without the organization and the private security alcohol concessions would pay for, the party might get out of control.
Besides funding security, the event raises significant money for charitable efforts. Photo by Kevin Goebel.
Jackson West has seen pretty much every fun street party scaled back or shut down entirely since he moved here.
