The prime time for Bay Area ocean shows is getting under way.
As we inch closer to winter, our oceans become home to one of the greatest marine shows around.
The annual migration of the California Gray Whale from Alaska to Baja gets underway this winter.
Santa Cruz County’s coastline offers some of the best whale watching in Calif., from December through April.
The migrating whales, up to 45 feet long, can be seen jumping in and out of the water.
The whales travel 70 to 80 miles per day at a rate of three to five miles per hour.
Their 10,000 to 14,000-mile round-trip trek is the longest known distance any mammal migrates on an annual basis.
Several companies offer boat guided tours of the bay, where people often see sea lions, sea otters, orcas, humpback whales and blue whales.
