Jenny Lewis Sells Sex Appeal at The Fillmore

Jenny Lewis is known for just her musical skills.

Jenny Lewis oozes sex appeal, and she knows it. That's why the famously red-headed singer received cries of "I love you, Jenny" and "she's even hotter in person" upon walking on stage this past Thursday at the Fillmore in a loose-fitting over-the-shoulder top, fishnet stockings, and tiny black shorts.

And that's why her band mate (and boyfriend) Johnathan Rice said during last Thursday’s performance at The Fillmore in San Francisco, "It may be illegal for all of us to get married. But it's definitely legal for us to be in love with Jenny Lewis."

Once onstage, Lewis and her five-piece band wasted no time before plunging into the country-tinged "See Fernando." She continued on with a number of songs from her new album, "Acid Tongue," including "Pretty Bird," "Carpetbagger" (a fan favorite), and the rollicking "Jack Killed Mom."

She also performed songs such as "You Are What You Love" and "Melt Your Heart" from her first album without Rilo Kiley, "Rabbit Fur Coat."

But the biggest hit of the night was “The Next Messiah", an eight plus minute long duet with Rice that allowed Lewis to show off her serious vocal chops.

Lewis and her band didn't skimp on the encores, either. The chanteuse first played an acoustic version of "Acid Tongue" while the rest of the band stood in the back with their arms around each other, occasionally chiming in to sing certain lines. Next up was a brand new song, followed by the quiet "Sing a Song for Them."

The whole time, Lewis nimbly switched between acoustic guitar, electric guitar and piano. In that respect, she resembled a countrified version of Grace Potter, another multi-talented singer with sex appeal to spare.

Unlike Potter, however, Lewis seemed slightly uncomfortable exchanging banter with the audience. Maybe that's why she downed two beers and what appeared to be a glass of champagne during the show.

Whatever the reason, Jenny Lewis' musical performance won't likely be forgotten by audience members (including myself) any time soon.
