Fewer Flights for Summer Flings

The change could hurt your summer travel plans.

Just in time to book your summer vacation, two Bay Area airports are seeing big drops in service according to USA TODAY analysis.

The paper looked at the "Official Airline Guide" for June 2009 and found a 19.1% drop in service at Oakland and a 16.9% drop in San Jose by this summer.

The paper said airlines can cut flying capacity two different ways: by cutting the number of daily flights on a certain route or using smaller planes with fewer seats.

Some of the cutbacks have already happened while others are still in the hopper.

The cuts are a direct result of a dropoff in business travel.

Domestic schedules saw the deepest cuts.

USA TODAY said service at the country's top business airports (New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver and Minneapolis) is faring better.
