After 14 years in the NBA, basketball legend Nate Thurmond returned to his Bay Area roots and opened a Big Nate's BBQ in the City's South of Market district. Visitors are greeted with by two huge smokers and the smell of sweet meat as soon as they walk into the restaurant where barbecue is king. The menu has a basketball theme with "Fast Break" and "Three Point" combos and the price is right, with the large portion meals (with sides) setting you back no more than $20. The San Francisco Chronicle describes the ribs as "wonderfully tender and not too fatty" and says the chicken is "even better -- moist and smoky." And chances are you might bump into the 6'11" owner, who hangs out at his restaurant several days a week.
