Professorville and nearby parts of Palo Alto have been incubators for successful startup companies ever since a group of Stanford professors decided they wanted to own their homes instead of lease them from the university decades ago.
Hewlett-Packard started the trend in a garage in 1935, Sergey Brin and Larry Page took added to the history pages when they found Google, and Facebook has become the modern symbol of successful startups in and around the historic district.
The neighborhood -- bounded by Addison and Cowper St. to the northwest and northeast and Emerson St. and Embarcadero Rd. to the southwest and southeast -- is famous for its longtime residents and its homage to Dutch Colonial architecture.
