To Attract Sting, America's Cup Concert Venue Doubled In Size

It's more people for Sting -- otherwise there would be no Sting.

If you build it, Sting might come. But if he doesn't, build it bigger.

The concert venue planned for the America's Cup Village at Piers 27-29 along The Embarcadero in San Francisco -- called the America's Cup Pavilion -- will fit 9,000 spectators, not the 4,000 originally planned and approved, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

The doubling was required in order to attract world-class entertainment, like Grammy Award-winning recording artist Sting, race organizers said.

It worked. Sting will perform at the new venue on June 2.

Plans for the America's Cup -- a yacht race that attracts some of the world's best sailors as well as wealthiest yacht owners -- were exhaustively reviewed for almost a year. The original plans called for a 4,000 person venue at the site; plans filed a year later, and deemed not worthy of further environmental review, called for a 10,000 person venue that would see up to 40 concerts between May 1 and October 31, the newspaper reported.

No acts other than Sting have been announced for the concert venue thus far.

The Pavilion is a temporary structure that will host America's Cup ceremonies and viewing events as well as music shows.
