City Wants to Pier Into a Technology Hub

San Francisco officials are looking for developers to turn a historic city shipyard on the edge of the Mission Bay neighborhood into a technology hub.

Ship repair businesses already occupy part of Pier 70, which is owned by the Port of San Francisco. The city now wants to lure high-tech companies and other businesses to the 69-acre site.

Mayor Gavin Newsom put out a letter to would-be developers on Monday for the first chunk of the project -- redeveloping 25 acres of the pier that are currently home to the city's tow yard.

Newsom says the pier is among the last large parcels of land remaining for development in San Francisco.

Plans call for potential developers to respond by November.

City officials say construction could begin in 2012 or 2013.
