Fun with Public Art UPDATE: North Beach Installs Plaza, Flying Books

A Curbed operative spotted the beginnings of the new turning-lane-cum-"plaza" at the northwest corner of Broadway at Columbus. The street has been re-routed, curbs poured, and if all moves forward as planned, we should expect to see a solar-powered art piece installed overhead in the near future. Idealism abounds: Language of the Birds is a flock of 23 flying, illuminated books made of translucent polycarbonate and designed by artists Brian Goggin with Dorka Keehn. Underneath the books are words and phrases in English, Italian, and Chinese that appear to have fallen from their pages. Installation is set for October 20th.
