Good Idea or Bad Idea: Leasing City Space

Looking to dip your toe into the commercial development pool? Why not start small and lease a little space from the city. The Real Estate Division of San Francisco, in conjunction with the SFMTA, is now accepting requests for proposals for the seven commercial spaces at the base of the 3rd St. Moscone Center Garage, on the art-filled plaza shared with Sculpturesite Gallery — you know the one. Be warned though: the spaces all come "as-is" and improvements will surely be required. It's also worth mentioning that the city reserves the right to terminate the lease and "recapture" the property after four years. On the plus side, though, you've got two built-in crowds: sculpture-lovers and conventioneers. While the former may be hesitant to buy whatever you're selling, no one spends (other people's) money better than conventioneers. For more stories from Curbed SF, go to sf.curbed.com.
