Injury Sidelines Montana's City Council Appearance

An "accident" causes Montana to delay hotel "pitch."

Even in retirement, an injury can keep Joe Montana off the playing field.

This time, instead of a football field, Montana's latest challenge takes place in the political arena. The former San Francisco 49ers' great was scheduled to appear before the Santa Clara City Council on Tuesday night to pitch the development of a luxury hotel project he is a part of, near the proposed 49ers' stadium.

But Montana's lawyer informed the city Monday that due to an undisclosed injury the Hall of Fame quarterback will not be able to attend session.

"Mr. Montana sustained non-life threatening injuries in an accident over the weekend that will preclude him from appearing before the Council Tuesday night," Robert L Mezzetti, Montana's attorney, wrote in a letter to the city.

Requests to clarify the nature of the accident and Montana's injuries were denied Monday afternoon. Mezzetti wrote that Montana would still like to appear before the council to discuss the project "in the near future."
