A 100-mile swath of diverse California wilderness spanning six counties between the Bay Area and Sacramento could soon become a national monument.
Dubbed the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Conservation Area, the half-million-acre section of inner coast range includes rivers, oak woodlands that begin near the town of Winters to the 7,000-foot peak of Snow Mountain in the Mendocino National Forest.
The corridor has now been included on a list of prospective national monuments in an Interior Department draft document made public last month.
Four of the 14 proposed candidates are in California: the Berryessa site, the Bodie Hills, the Modoc Plateau and an expansion into California of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument from Oregon.
