Show's Over: Hard Knocks for Harding Theater

And another development goes down: it looks like Harding Theater will sit vacant for at least a little longer. The 75-year-old Western Addition theater at Divisadero and Hayes streets was set to become but a shell of its former self, gutted and turned into a mixed-use complex of retail and eight condo units. But oh, enter the neighborhood preservation group. Friends of 1800 took their cause to the Planning Department's initial environmental review of the project, and succeeded in winning a full review from the Planning Commission. But the Friends aren't exactly seeking a compromise: they want the theater fully restored sans retail, condos and gutted interior.
